SHORT TRADE IDEAS SET NEW RECORDS, REFLECTING WORLDWIDE MARKET VOLATILITY
NEW YORK & LONDON, August 26, 2008 -- Trade Ideas Limited (TIL) announced today that its leading industry-wide trade idea platform for institutional brokerage firms and investors continued to set new records in July 2008, with volume for both electronically transmitted trade ideas, and the quantity and percentage of new short ideas reaching new highs.
Simon Tizard, TIL’s Executive Director, said the activity reflected how the sell and buy side were responding to increased market volatility around the world. He said that during July 2008:
- Volume of trade ideas electronically transmitted via the TIL’s Repository and Distribution Centre (RDC) increased 370% year over year, to 35,705. The prior record was 20,898 set in June 2008. At July 31, 2008, total volume of live and historical trade ideas in TIL’s database of 248,535 was 292% greater year over year.
- The number of new short ideas increased 865% year over year, to 15,264. The previous record was 8,081 set in June 2008. Shorts increased to 43% of new ideas versus 21% a year ago. The previous record was 41% in April and March of 2008.
The activity also reflected strong growth in Europe, North America, and Asia for the value-added service, which is offered by brokers, according to Colin Berthoud, Director of youDevise Limited. youDevise markets the Trade Ideas Monitor (TIM), the leading third-party alpha capture system for creating, sending and receiving ideas sent through the RDC. Mr. Berthoud said the number of firms using the platform grew 66% year over year, to 368, in July 2008.
About Trade Ideas Limited
Trade Ideas Limited (www.tradeideas.org) was founded in 2005 by Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Dresdner Kleinwort and Merrill Lynch to encourage the use of trade ideas as a commission-generating, value-added brokerage service, to complement sell side traditional research. The TIL created the RDC for the secure transmission and storage of ideas between participating firms. As opposed to traditional research, trade ideas are client specific recommendations, developed by institutional sales people, that suggest not only what stocks to buy long or sell short, but also how much money to invest, how to build the position, when to close it, and the rationale.
